There’s no point in buying a Porsche if you’re not going to take in for a service every 6 months. There’s no point in buying a fancy new sofa if you’re going to eat nachos on it. And there’s no point investing in high-quality plasterboard if you can’t properly maintain it.
To be honest, plasterboard is pretty low-maintenance. All it really asks is to be dusted once in a while, to be painted every blue moon, to be properly ventilated, and to be free of water exposure.
So, here’s how you do each of those things and properly maintain your plasterboard walls and ceilings.
1. Dusting
Yes, walls are vertical. And yes, they still gather dust.
Not dusting plasterboard walls is one of the big mistakes we see people make. Over time, dust gathers on plasterboard walls and makes them look dirty and grimy, along with posing health hazards and being bad for your lungs. Take an ordinary duster every few months and give your plasterboard a light dusting.
2. Cleaning
Wear and tear is expected in all homes, and with plasterboard, this usually means scuffing or staining. Thankfully, plasterboard is very resilient, and most scuffs and stains can actually be wiped clean.
Take a clean, lightly damp cloth with a bit of dish soap on it and gently wipe away any scuffs and marks off your plasterboard. Then, pat down the area with a dry cloth.
3. Proper ventilation
Plasterboard likes to live in well-ventilated areas. Even wet area plasterboard, which is specifically designed for humid rooms like laundries and bathrooms, should be in properly ventilated areas.
One of the ways we can do this is by using an extractor fan in the bathroom, or using a dehumidifier in other areas of the home during particularly muggy days.
4. Filling cracks
Cracks and dents are also part of the package with plasterboard – but luckily, it’s super easy to patch them up. Joint compound is a cheap, accessible filler for cracks, which is easy to apply. Fill the gap, sand it until it’s smooth and repaint as needed. Easy peasy!
5. Look out for leaks
The best way to maintain plasterboard is to prevent serious damage – especially caused by leaks. Getting a roof inspection once a year is paramount to preventing leaks, which can destroy plasterboard walls and ceilings if not treated quick enough.
