Common Mistakes to Avoid When Working with Plasterboard

When embarking on a construction project involving plasterboard, it’s easy to assume the process will be straightforward. While plasterboard is indeed a user-friendly material, there are several common mistakes that can hinder the quality and efficiency of your work. Understanding these pitfalls and how to avoid them can make a significant difference in the outcome of your project. To help you navigate these challenges effectively, we’ve gathered key tips from the experts at Plaster Wholesalers. By being aware of these potential issues, you can ensure a smoother, more successful experience when working with plasterboard.

Incorrect cutting

If you’re new to working with plasterboard, one of the first techniques you need to learn is the art of cutting – or snapping and scoring, as we call it. Making inaccurate or rough cuts can ruin a good piece of plasterboard, so it’s super important to plan your cut well.

Use a sharp utility knife to carefully score the paper surface, then swiftly snap the board along the line.

Screwing in too far

When it comes to fastening the plasterboard, it’s common for newbies to think that tighter is better. Hot tip: it’s not.

Screwing in the screws too deeply can actually cause cracks in the plasterboard. That’s why it’s recommended to drive the screws until they’re just below the surface of the plasterboard. Driving them in any further won’t provide more support.

Careless joining

Joining two pieces of plasterboard together is another ultra-important process to get right – otherwise your plasterboard could look lopsided, ugly, or both.

First, apply your joining tape smoothly and evenly, so that there are no little bumps along it. Then, give the joints a wipe down to get rid of any dust before applying the joint compound – again, applying it smoothly and evenly.

Failing to apply primer

Why people think they can skip primer we’ll never understand. Primer is actually the most important part of painting – it helps the paint stick to the plasterboard, so that it doesn’t flake off. Make sure at least one layer of primer is applied before you get ham with the white paint!
